The Oakleaf Hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia) is one of Alabama's most beautiful native plants — and one of the most overlooked by photographers. The blooms are complex, layered things: the outer ring of flat, four-petal sepals frames a dense cluster of smaller buds at the center, each one waiting to open. This particular morning in the Bankhead, the light was soft and the dew was still fresh on every petal, catching that early quiet hour in a way that's hard to plan for.
