Golden sunlight sweeps across a rugged mountain ridge near Chimney Tops, illuminating the early autumn foliage while deep shadows reveal the dramatic contours of the Great Smoky Mountains.
The mountains have a way of changing their appearance with the light. A ridge that seems ordinary in the middle of the day can become something entirely different when sunlight begins to move across its slopes.
Photographed from the Chimney Tops overlook in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, *When the Mountains Catch the Light* captures a moment when golden sunlight illuminates portions of the mountainside while the surrounding ridges remain in shadow.
The contrast brings out the rugged contours of the landscape and the changing colors of autumn, creating a scene that caught my attention during an October visit to the Smokies.
