New Year’s Morning on Dauphin Island: The Story Behind “Foam’s Gentle Kiss”
Summer has a way of pulling everyone toward the coast. The itch to feel sand underfoot, hear the rhythm of the waves, and just breathe for a minute — it’s real. So this week, I wanted to share a beach image that captures exactly that feeling: quiet, unhurried, and peaceful.
The funny thing? I shot it on New Year’s morning.
A Last-Minute Detour
On New Year’s Eve 2024, I drove down to Mobile for the Moon Pie Drop — the city’s own version of the Times Square ball drop, and a uniquely Alabama way to ring in the new year. On the drive home the next morning, January 1st, 2025, I made a last-minute decision to swing by Dauphin Island before heading back to Tuscaloosa.
It was one of those impulsive stops that turns out to be exactly right.
The beach was quiet the way only a winter morning can be — no crowds, no noise, just the steady rhythm of the Gulf coming in and going out. The sun was already bright and high for 9 a.m., cutting sharp across the sand and making every grain and shell sparkle.
Getting Down Low
I wasn’t planning a formal shoot. But something about the way that foam was rolling in made me want to get close — really close. I dropped down low, brought out the 28-70mm, and waited for the right moment.

The goal was to catch that leading edge of foam mid-roll, just as it kissed the shore. I deliberately kept the depth of field shallow, letting the foam line stay sharp while the background faded — that choice pulls your eye right along the water’s edge and gives the image a sense of forward motion, even in stillness.
The shells were hard to miss — they were covering the beach from the moment you stepped onto the sand. Getting down low brought them right into the foreground, making them part of the composition rather than just background scenery — little details scattered across the frame like punctuation.
Why “Foam’s Gentle Kiss”
The name came straight from the image itself. There’s no better way to describe what’s happening in that frame — the foam doesn’t crash or pound. It drifts in, touches the shore softly, and retreats. Gentle is exactly the right word.
That’s what I want people to feel when they look at this print. Peace. Calm. The kind of quiet that a beach morning gives you before the rest of the world wakes up.

It’s Summer — Go Find Your Shore Moment
I chose to share this image this week because it’s summer, and summer means beach trips. Whether you’re heading to Dauphin Island, Gulf Shores, or somewhere further out, there’s something about the coast in July that just resets everything.
This print is part of my Coastlines & Shores collection. If you’ve been looking for something that brings that calm, unhurried beach feeling into your home year-round, this one was made for that. You can view it here: bamaprice.com/coastlines-shores
