Sand, Shells, and Foam's Gentle Kiss

Sometimes the photographs I remember most aren't the grand landscapes or dramatic sunrises. They're the quiet moments that almost go unnoticed.

After spending New Year's Eve in Mobile for the MoonPie Drop, I decided to make one more stop before heading home. I'd never been to Dauphin Island, and with the first morning of the new year just beginning, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore.

The beach was almost empty. A couple of people were fishing in the distance, but otherwise it was just the sound of the waves, the chilly wind, and thousands of shells scattered across the sand. It was cold enough to remind you it was January, but peaceful enough to make you forget about it.

As I walked along the shoreline, I became fascinated by the shells. At first, I photographed them from above, but the images weren't telling the story I wanted. So I lowered the camera until it was almost resting on the sand, hoping to capture the beach from the shells' perspective.

I wasn't trying to photograph a wave.

I was simply photographing the shells when, by pure luck, a gentle wave rolled in. The sea foam wrapped around them for just a moment before quietly slipping back into the Gulf. That single instant became Foam's Gentle Kiss.

Sometimes the best photographs aren't planned. They're gifts that appear when you're paying attention.

When people see this photograph hanging on their wall, I hope they don't just see shells and sea foam. I hope they feel what I felt standing there on that cold New Year's morning.
