Chasing Shangri-la: A Journey into Bankhead National Forest

Deep within the Bankhead National Forest lies a secluded sanctuary that feels like it was plucked from a novel. Shangri-la Falls is a seasonal wonder, best known for its vibrant blue-green plunge pool and the iconic leaning tree that frames the falls.
The "AllTrails" Reality Check
While you can find Shangri-la Falls on the AllTrails app, there is a catch that catches many hikers off guard. As of June of 2025, the app doesn't account for the additional one-mile hike from the forest service gate to the actual trailhead. The hike into the canyon at Collier Creek is steep and can be quite slippery, especially during our humid Alabama summers.

The Extra Mile: Expect to add a two-mile round trip on foot just to reach the start of the descent into the canyon.

Navigation Tip: Once you hit the trail, the path becomes a steep, rugged scramble down Collier Creek. It is absolutely worth the effort for the blue-green oasis at the bottom, but prepare for a workout before you even take your lens cap off!
-
Pro Tip: I always recommend sturdy hiking boots, a good supply of drinking water, and marking your car on your GPS before you descend into the canyon.
Why the Water is So Blue
One of the most frequent questions I get at shows about my Shangri-la prints is, "Is the water really that color?" The answer is yes. The stunning blue-green hue is believed to be caused by minute traces of limestone in the water, creating a tropical "oasis" feel right here in North Alabama.
The Artist’s Choice: For this shot, I used a long exposure to smooth the waterfall while keeping the mossy rocks and leaning tree in sharp focus. The result is a piece that brings a sense of serenity and "fictional" beauty to any room.
Seasonal Magic
While Shangri-la is a popular summer swimming hole, it is a seasonal waterfall. To capture it with full water volume, late spring is ideal before the summer heat settles in.
-
Summer Strategy: In the summer months, I focus on the lush, thick underbrush and the deep shadows of the canyon, which provide a cooling "emerald" aesthetic.
